Lifetime
Learning Inc., Ahavat Limud School is registered as a K-12 school with
the Florida Department of Education. The focus of the school is
primarily high school students, with middle school and advanced
elementary students accepted on a case-by-case basis.
The College Board code for the school is 101858. The school utilizes small classrooms, and a tutorial/mentoring approach.
The school is beginning its sixth year.
The
Class of 2004 -- our first graduating class -- had an average SAT score
of 1300, with 100% of its graduates matriculating to a two or four year
college/university.
The average SAT score for the
2005 graduating class was 1020 with 66% of the graduating class
currently matriculating to a two or four year college or university.
Students graduating from Lifetime Learning School have been accepted into the following schools:
- Antioch College
- Bergen Community College
- Broward Community College
- Bennington College
- Embry-Riddle University
- Evergreen State College
- Florida Atlantic University
- Hampshire College
- New College of Florida (The Honors College of Florida)
The
curriculum for the college bound student is rigorous and chosen from
the best on the market. So far none of the students has chosen to take
AP courses; rather, they have focused on Honors coursework. Florida
State Standards provide the starting point for requirements.
Each
student’s course load is carefully chosen based on individual student
needs, goals and interests. A high degree of motivation,
independence and initiative are required to complete the program which
allows internships, cooperative work programs, a focus on learning
while doing and hands-on type educational experiences. In order to
complete courses, mastery must be demonstrated.
The current foreign languages offered at the school include:
- French
- German
- Hebrew
- Italian
- Classical Latin
- Latin American Spanish
- Thai
The
above courses are utilizing the Rosetta Stone Language program with the
exception of Latin, which utilizes the Cambridge Latin program.
The
Language Arts program emphasizes mastery in areas of Grammar,
Composition, Vocabulary, Spelling, and Literature. Elective English
courses may be individually designed based on the learning objectives
for the individual student.
The Mathematics program
combines Algebra I and II into an integrated two-year course. The
primary curriculum used is Videotext Algebra, which emphasizes
understanding as opposed to rote learning. Their Geometry-Trig course
is being integrated into the curriculum as it becomes available.
The
Science program emphasizes extensive laboratory experience. Most
students utilize the honors courses designed by Apologia Press
including courses in Biology, Advanced Biology, Chemistry, Advanced
Chemistry, Marine Biology, Physics and Advanced Physics. Students have
also studied Astronomy.
The Social Studies program
utilizes basic textbooks with a focus on moving beyond the textbooks
and individualizing a hands-on curriculum. Students have traveled to
foreign countries as part of their credits and taken various courses
available in the community as well as traveling to historic sites in
the US.
